Editing services
Individually or combined, I provide three main editing services at competitive rates.
Fixing spelling, punctuation, and grammar is merely one part of the process. While editing, I use recognized style guides such as APA and CMOS, and dictionaries for guidance on UK, US and Australian/NZ English.
I also consider audience expectations, tone, word choice, clarity, logic, and the general format of your manuscript. I use marginal comments (MS Word track changes and comments) to offer feedback. These comments highlight words or ideas that may confuse your readers, or pose questions that your readers may want you to answer.
Stylistic or line editing
This type of editing aims to improve writing style for clarity, elegance, and flow.
Line editing involves:
- Reviewing each sentence and paragraph for a variety of factors, including the impact on the intended audience
- Restructuring sentences where needed, including the removal/change of unnecessary or inappropriate words
- Adding transitions to improve the overall flow, coherence, and readability of the text.
Line editing often overlaps with copyediting, which is why they can be performed together.

Copyediting
This type of editing aims to ensure correctness, accuracy, consistency, and completeness in your text.
Copyediting tasks include:
- Checking for grammar, spelling and punctuation errors
- Implementing consistency in style and formatting throughout the document
- Improving clarity and flow, all while not introducing errors or changing the author’s meaning.
Copyediting and line editing can take anywhere from a few hours to several days, depending on the length and complexity of the document. Editors prefer working with Microsoft Word documents because we need the ability to work with the text itself using track changes and the comments function.
This service is best for writers who are confident that their content is sound, and need help with the writing at paragraph and sentence level.

Proofreading
This is the last opportunity to catch errors in a text that may have slipped past several rounds of editing before printing and publication.
Proofreaders:
- Hunt down tiny inconsistencies and grammatical errors that have escaped the author, copyeditor, and other reviewers
- Examine material after layout or in final format to correct errors in textual and visual elements
- will study your text closely, but will leave awkward sentences that are grammatically correct, unchanged. They are not tasked with improving your voice or the tone of your writing.
Proofreading will only be performed on work that has been copyedited.

How does it work?
Step 1
Contact me via email at hello@elysiumediting.com or my website contact form to discuss how I can help with your manuscript and editing goals. I only take on a project if I’m certain that I can do my best for you. I will keep any documents, including your manuscript, confidential when you share them with me.
Step 2
If we agree to proceed, I’ll need to see the full manuscript. I’ll perform a free sample edit from the middle of your text (between 500 and 1000 words) for manuscripts over 5000 words. For shorter texts, skip step 2 and go to step 3.
Step 3
Once we agree we are a good fit for each other, we’ll discuss the finer details and timing of the editing project. We’ll talk about the type of editing, the scope of work, word count, text format, number of editing rounds (if applicable), the number and frequency of progress reports, payment terms, and the start and end date for the project.
Step 4
At this point, I’ll prepare a written quote containing the scope of work, deadlines, the total price payable, deposit payable (if applicable) and payment terms (if applicable).
Step 5
Once you’ve accepted the quote, and completed my client onboarding form, I’ll send you an agreement for signature, setting out the terms and conditions of our editing contract.
Step 6
I’ll start working on your manuscript on the contractually agreed date.

Pricing
This shows my starting-at prices for longer texts/manuscripts (over 5000 words) and is roughly based on the fees recommended by various editing organisations, such as IPEd (Australia), EFA (USA) and CIEP (UK).
However, I always provide quotes on a job-by-job basis, as each editing project is unique. The quote will reflect the specific circumstances and nature of your work.
When preparing a quote, I consider the type of document, the document’s condition and complexity, and the turnaround time/deadline for the project.
